Wood describes his childhood in San Francisco and Berkeley, his enrollment at the University in 1939, his enlistment in Navy R.O.T.C, and his affiliation with the Sea Scouts which continued into his adulthood. He describes his arrest in 1952 on a charge of contributing to the delinquency of minors. His activities in San Francisco during the 1960s and 1970s include membership in the Society for Individual Rights (S.I.R.), and frequent visits to the Black Cat Cafe.
